Music Festival 2011
To commemorate 9/11 crack
On September 11th 2011, HSBC Cheltenham Music Festival is to present the world premiere of 'Not In Our Time', a major 50 minute choral and orchestral work by acclaimed British composer Richard Blackford (b. 1954) to mark the tenth anniversary of the events of 9/11.
The work, which is commissioned by the Bournemouth Symphony Chorus for its Centenary in 2011, takes as a starting point the attack on the World Trade Centre in September 2001 and explores the universal theme of wars declared in God's name, juxtaposing texts from our own time e.g. from Barack Obama and George Bush with those from around the time of the First Crusade.
The Bournemouth Symphony Chorus and Orchestra will be conducted by Gavin Carr with tenor and baritone soloists to be announced. The concert will take place on September 11th 2011 at Cheltenham Town Hall, and will be presented as a one off event two months after the HSBC Cheltenham Music Festival itself (which runs from 29th June – 10th July 2011).
Richard Blackford noted: "The words I've chosen are intensely dramatic and highly charged: the subject is controversial, the music is explosive, searing and passionate. Perhaps it's through poetry and song that we can look unflinchingly at this tragedy of our time and offer some hope of reconciliation for the next generation".
HSBC Cheltenham Music Festival Director Meurig Bowen comments:
“We are delighted to be presenting this important work on such an important anniversary. The tenth anniversary, a year from now, of one of the most significant and shocking events in the history of humanity is sure to engage us all. Having this major new 9/11 work ‘Not In Our Time’ in Cheltenham will enable us to be at the heart of these anniversary reflections.’
