Nothing brings out the sceptic like Reiki. It’s hard to explain to people what it is and the more you try the more sceptical they become. If you tell them it ‘unblocks the energy channels’ or it ‘balances the chakras’ they get suspicious.

‘Is it one of those hippy treatments?’ someone asked me before I went. Try it, however, and you may be pleasantly surprised. You may even become a convert.

I have actually had Reiki before, twice in fact, about nine years ago. But it is different with each practitioner and this was the first time I had received Reiki from Alison at Absolute Beauty in Prestbury Road and I was intrigued as to how it would compare with the other sessions I had nine years ago.

We went into a room downstairs and the atmosphere was quite different - lots of candles, incense, soft lighting and mood music. OK, so it still sounds like a hippy treatment, but please be patient.

Firstly Alison covered me in a blanket - the room was already quite warm - and started by placing her hands on the top of my head. I had my eyes closed but I could feel her hands on my head and immediately felt a heat surge and saw colours before my eyes. Then she moved down concentrating on different parts of the face and body. The reaction was different for each part of the body. It was hottest around the heart chakra where the emotions lie. By the time she reached my feet the energy was quite cool. Alison also checked my energies before, during and after the treatment with a crystal pendulum as this is a good indicator for her, of how the energy is flowing at each point. Not all therapists use a pendulum, this is a personal choice.

The treatment lasted an hour though it felt as if it was much less. Throughout I didn’t know whether to talk or not. I decided not to as Alison didn’t speak and I didn’t want to be one of those people who keep wittering on because they find the silence embarrassing.

I thought I had been quite relaxed during the session but when we chatted after the session ended, Alison suggested to me that I needed to let go more, learn to relax and would benefit from further sessions.

Alison also told me later that the energy was stronger on the left side of my body than the right, which can indicate an influence from a strong female, maybe a family member, close friend or work colleague, possibly even someone from your past that still has an influence on how you conduct yourself and your life! I am still puzzling over this as I live in a male dominated family, with my husband and two grown up sons! At this stage I felt quite emotional, but I was reassured that this happens with some people, while others feel the urge to laugh or cry. It is part of the ‘release’ of blocked energy.

Now reading this you may still be sceptical, but later that evening something strange happened. I felt quite calm before I went to bed, unusual for me, and the mass of thoughts which dart around my brain were settled for once. Then for the first time in weeks I slept right through till 7.15 in the morning and felt refreshed when I woke up.

So what is Reiki?

Rei - Universal ~ Ki - Life Force

Reiki is a very ancient form of healing which is believed to have Tibetan origins. There are many formats of Reiki; in the west the most widely used is the Traditional Usui method. It is so called as it was rediscovered by a Japanese man named Dr Miko Usui in the middle of the 19th Century - hence its Japanese name, which is pronounced “ray key”.

Reiki not only rebalances the physical body but also clears the mind, calms the emotions and reawakens our connection with our soul. It is a perfect way to combat day-to-day stress.

Reiki involves the channelling of Universal Life Force Energy, the energy that lives within all created matter. Everyone has the potential to feel and use this energy, the training simply allows a person’s energy pathways to be opened and attuned to these energy wavelengths.

By learning this simple non-intrusive technique, you will reawaken your ability to tap into the reservoir of unlimited potential - that is the Universal Life Force Energy. The training will show you how to balance and replenish your own energies and after further training you are able to help others to receive the energy and create balance for themselves.

Who can benefit?

As your energy can be put out of balance by many things including shock, trauma, despair or negative emotion most people will benefit.

If you are still not convinced, I suggest you try it, but do so with an open mind. Even if you don’t believe in Universal Life Force Energy or balancing of the chakras, you will still feel the benefit, you just won’t be able to explain why!
