The Square Pillow

crack

There’s something very pink about The Square Pillow, an independent specialist bedlinen shop situated in the exclusive shopping area of Montpellier that really appeals to me. It’s partly the shop front and partly the sumptuous super-king-size bed in the middle of the shop with its dramatic pink and white tulip duvet cover. This is where you will find the ultimate in luxury from Switzerland and Italy, all made to suit your specific needs.

When The Square Pillow opened right here in Montpellier 23 years ago, next door to the current location, king was the largest size bed readily available in the UK, but once people had travelled to the US, they came back wanting super-king and The Square Pillow was one of the first shops to sell super-king bedlinen in Cheltenham.

Originally a mother and daughter partnership of 20 years, it is now run solely by Suzanne Langley-Sowter following her mother Barbara’s retirement, though Barbara is here in the shop while Suzanne and I chat about the advantages of pure Egyptian satinised cotton from Italy and Switzerland, manufactured to suit your bed measurements in over 40 mouth
watering colours.

Made to measure doesn’t just include the width and length of the bed. It also includes the depth of the mattress. That’s one of the reasons people return for a second and third set – because the fitted sheets fit so perfectly. Customers can also choose to have two single duvets for their super-king bed as one duvet can be very heavy and the covers can be a big beast to launder and put back on. It also means that partners can choose their own temperature of duvet. 3ft wide pillows are also recommended and stocked in a dozen different combinations of fillings.

Once the customer has chosen the size and colour or colours – the set can come in a mixture of any two colours if required, one colour for the middle and another contrasting around the edges – the turnaround is usually about 4-5 weeks. White and cream are still the most popular, Suzanne tells me, because the cream warms the white and looks very stylish.

As well as bedlinen, The Square Pillow supplies bathrobes by Christian Fiscbacher of Switzerland which can be made to match the bedlinen in any size. Suzanne can also order duvets and pillows to your specification. There is a wide range of cotton, silk or wool underwear from Hanro of Switzerland which is very comfortable to wear, cotton nightwear, slippers, handkerchiefs, children’s robes and towels. And cotton jersey fitted sheets - which don’t need ironing!

Just before I left Suzanne showed me the crème de la crème of duvets – a sample of the down which fills an eiderdown duvet. Eiderdown comes from the breast of the female Eider Duck which nests in Icelandic sanctuaries and has insulating properties superior to any other down. The duck is so rare that apparently there is only enough eiderdown available each year to make 200 duvets in the whole world!

The Square Pillow is located at 17 Rotunda Terrace, Montpellier Street, Cheltenham GL50 1SW and is open Monday to Saturday 10.00am to 5.00pm.
