This year Christopher James interiors celebrates completing 21 years of changing interiors for private and commercial customers. What changes have we seen in interiors and customer preferences? How does a small independent company compete with on line marketing and national chains?

Bill Flynn founder of Christopher James Interiors tells us a little about providing a local service to Cheltenham and the Cotswolds.....

Clearly there have been changes in how we fit out our windows , walls, floors and lighting.

Swags and tails, Austrian blinds and other elaborate treatments have largely given way to simpler finishes such as poles and Roman blinds. Wooden floors have become more popular as well as wood effect and tile effect vinyl floors such as Karndean or Amtico. Laminates also have their place.

Some things haven’t changed such as the need to be competitive and the need to give good advice, a wide choice and reliable service.

At Christopher James Interiors we have established good working relationships with known reliable fabric suppliers such as Sanderson, Harlequin, Crowson, Romo, John Wilman, Montgomery, Prestigious, Casamance and others, along with the UK’s largest carpet manufacturer Cormar Carpets, Victoria Carpets, Penthouse, Westex and others, Woodpecker wood flooring, Quick-Step, Panaget, and other wood flooring manufacturers.

Over the years we have learnt who the suppliers are that continually revue their products to ensure that trends are set and met with reliable products. By doing this we make sure we have up to date choices of known reliability.

Because we buy direct from manufacturers and we keep our overheads to the minimum we are able to offer the keenest prices. We pass these prices on to our customers. Our prices will always be competitive with those offered at retail parks, even after their sales discounts. Our products are priced at the lowest price possible rather than priced high with a discount.

Something else that hasn’t changed is the customer’s desire for sound advice on the products best suited to their home. What has changed is the amount of choice. For example the choice of hard floors.

This choice brings with it the need to make sure that the flooring is installed in such a way that the floor will last with no issues arising that may cause it to fail or deteriorate prematurely. There is nothing worse than choosing a floor that damages easily or deteriorates due to the type of room it is fitted in or because the right sub-floor preparation has not been carried out.

At Christopher James Interiors we are passionate about helping our customers choose the right flooring and making sure that everything is done during the installation to make sure it lasts. We will carry out checks on the sub-floor for flatness, dryness and firmness and identify as far as possible anything that needs to be done to prepare the sub-floor before the new flooring is installed. This way there are no hidden surprises or unknown additional costs, the floor will be installed in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations, look good on completion, and the customer will be delighted. Future problems are also avoided such as floors lifting, distorting, squeaking or wearing prematurely.

The same attention to detail is also applied to the advice and service we give to customers interested in curtains, blinds and soft furnishing. Our fully trained sales advisors are qualified interior designers familiar with all our products and offer friendly expert advice on which products are best suited for each customer.

All our tradesmen are experienced tradesmen who work to high standards to ensure all our customers are happy with the quality of installation.

Over the years this approach has led to a high percentage of customers happy to return when they need further work carried out, or to recommend us to their friends and family.

What about customers who like to buy on line? Our prices are generally competitive with on-line offers and generally we are able to offer a service which guarantees good choice, sensible selection, and satisfactory installation.

Customers have the use of a free car park opposite the shop, and our shop is well stocked with samples of all types of flooring, fabrics and blinds.

Our interior design service is available to private and commercial customers, along with our supply and fitting service.

Although choices and styles have changed, the demand for sound advice and good service at a competitive rate have increased, particularly with the effects of the recent recession and financial market difficulties. We hope to carry on meeting those demands in the same diligent way we have become used to.
