Simpsons Fish & Chips

The Best Fish & Chips Around? crack

Who doesn’t love fish and chips? A lovely piece of battered fish accompanied by a portion of chips, all smothered in salt and vinegar. I particularly like haddock, though cod is good too and my husband loves his chip buttie.

So what a treat to be asked to write about Simpsons and interview the co-owner James Ritchie. But there’s no point just writing about it. This project I think requires some serious investigation and sampling.....

Simpson’s Fish and Chips in Priors Road, Cheltenham, isn’t just any fish and chop shop – it’s a family empire with branches in Chepstow and Bradley Stoke, near Bristol.

The first Simpsons Fish and Chips opened in Chepstow in January 2009, followed by Cheltenham in November 2009 and Bradley Stoke opened July 2010. Janette Simpson owned her first fish and chip shop in 1976, and was joined by Brian in 1982 after his service in the RAF. Over the last 34 years they have perfected their art in 11 different shops and believe they have the best fish and chips around! Their daughter Bonny is married to James and runs the Cheltenham shop with him.

Their ethos is simple; they want to provide the best fish and chips to their customers while maintaining cleanliness, great customer service and professionalism. This is not fast food, it’s great food, served fast!

All the cod and haddock is skinless and boneless. Simpsons also fry in pure groundnut oil which makes everything lighter and crispier. They cook fish to order to guarantee freshness. Their main fish is the best quality ‘frozen at sea’ cod, which comes in huge fillets and has to be thawed and cut into portions every morning. The batter has to be thin and crispy. All food is probed to make sure it’s to the correct temperature before it’s ready to serve. The chips are cooked fresh often and if they think they are past their best they get thrown away. The potatoes are bought from local British farmers and each shop has a different supplier so there are less food miles.

At Simpsons they hope to provide a friendly and reliable local chippy that guarantees great food every time you return. They can cater for any occasion, from kids’ parties to business meetings and can deliver for a minimum order. You can even eat in and save doing the washing up!

You can also pick up a loyalty card on your next visit. Every time you spend £5 or more you get a stamp and after 9 stamps you get a free fish and chips of any size!

The Cheltenham shop has been awarded the only 5 Star Seafish Friers Quality Award in Gloucestershire.

Simpsons is at 73-75 Priors Road, Cheltenham.
