Don Browning Trophies

Don Browning Trophies has become an established name in Cheltenham; Jackie McKenzie met up with owner Richard Browning to find out more about the broad range of engraving services they offer. crack

Don Browning Trophies is one of Gloucestershire’s leading trophy, award and engraving specialists, with products ranging from cups, trophies, crystal glassware, wooden shields & plaques, pewter-ware, medals, to corporate awards; all available for a huge range of sports and activities.

However, they also supply and engrave a great range of crystal glass tableware, including decanters, wine glasses, whisky tumblers, tankards and beer glasses and many other items; they feature makers such asMario Cioni, Stuart Crystal,Waterford and Edinburgh Crystal, all of which can be engraved.

“Two years ago, we invested in new glass and crystal engraving equipment and so are now able to manufacture our own stencils, which are then sandblasted onto the item,” says Richard. “We can offer this service on a same day/next day basis. We can reproduce any of the available computer fonts, as well as logos, crests, in fact almost any design in jpeg format. Also, customers can bring their own glassware to be engraved, which makes the perfect gift for birthdays, weddings, and anniversaries.”

Their impressive client base includes Gloucester Rugby, Cheltenham Ladies College, Cheltenham Town FC, GCHQ,Maitech Tyres (Italy), EDF Energy, and Cheltenham College – large organisations, small clubs or teams, and individual customers. In April 2007, Don Browning Trophies moved premises into St. George’s Street, Cheltenham where they continue to provide their customers with the unrivalled service they have come to expect. “Our customers tell us that they prefer to come into a ‘proper shop’, as opposed to an industrial unit or home-based operation,” explained Richard.

Richard’s father, Don Browning, established his first business in 1948 as a watchmaker and jeweller, eventually diversifying into trophies and engraving in 1978 and opening the original Don Browning Trophies in Cheltenham’s High Street with his late wife Doreen. As a former cricket umpire and one of the founding members of the North GloucestershireMotorcycle Road Racing Club, Don was able to bring his great wealth of knowledge about Gloucestershire’s sporting scene to great use, establishing Cheltenham’s first specialist trophy and engraving outlet. Richard is the youngest son of Don and Doreen and joined the business as an engraver in 1980 before taking over the running of the company in 1997. Also from a sporting background, Richard is a single-figure handicap golfer and a keen follower of Gloucester Rugby Club.

Opening hours at Don Browning Trophies are 9am-5pm, exceptWednesday and Saturday 9am-1pm, closed Sunday.
