Valentine's night at 81 The Prom
Emma Logan samples the Fine Indian Cuisine at 81 The Prom, Punjabi Style...
81 The Prom is a new Indian edition to join the boutique restaurants and bars along Cheltenham’s Promenade, with the added bonus that it serves exceptionally good cocktails in its lovely downstairs bar.
I can highly recommend The Cheltonian cocktail, which Raj created especially for us, an essential way to start your evening. You will receive a warm welcome from the delightful owner, Mrs Boyle, who along with her husband opened the restaurant a few weeks ago.
81 The Prom has created a Valentine’s Day menu which at only £25 for 3 courses, a side dish and a glass of fizz or wine on arrival, is exceptional value in these times of austerity.
Starters are a generous mixed platter consisting of fresh bites such as samosas, onion bhajis, paneer rolls and a selection of chicken, fish and shish kebabs, served with homemade chutneys.
The main courses that follow include an assortment of meat, fish or vegetarian choices, accompanied by rice or Nan and a side dish with several choices, such as Bombay Allo and Channa Massala.
If you still have room, delicious, traditional Indian puddings and ice cream are freshly prepared and you have to try Mrs Boyle’s secret recipe pudding – it just melts in the mouth.
81 The Prom has a good selection of New World and European wines and particularly impressive, is their range of Champagnes from the Piper-Heidsieck family. 81 The Prom is open for lunch and dinner and the cocktail bar stays open until 2am so there is plenty of time to enjoy a romantic dinner and stay late.
