80s Memorabilia Needed for Regent Arcade 25th Anniversary Exhibition
Twenty five years ago this month Her Royal Highness the Princess Anne officially opened the brand new Regent Arcade.
Cheltenham’s premier shopping centre is owned by Canada Life and was one of the first American-style shopping malls to be built outside London. People flocked to see its stylish décor, marvel at the choice of shops to be enjoyed all under one roof, and quickly discovered that it was a handy and more interesting route to get from the Promenade to the High Street!
In the days when we had only four television channels and mobile phones the size of bricks were just for rich businessmen, ladies wore Princess Diana inspired hats for the opening and casual clothing had yet to become the norm. Members of the public, many wearing jackets and ties gathered on what is now the escalator to watch the ceremony...
Over the past two years the Regent Arcade has had a major facelift to bring it up to the standard expected by 21st century retailing. A new environmentally friendly clear roof lets in far more light and keeps in far more heat, whilst the clean, white lines combine with warm-wood tones to create a contemporary feel.
Throughout 2010 the Arcade will be holding special anniversary events to celebrate its silver anniversary so keep an eye on the posters inside the centre for more details. We hope to set up a special 80’s exhibition and would love to hear from any reader who may have their own photographs of the official opening or any interesting items from the 80s we can display. The 80s was a decade of rapid technological advances as we said goodbye to flared loons and cheesecloth and welcomed legwarmers.

Hester’s Way Primary School student Elizabeth Shawcross (9) and her bunny ‘Crystal’ won the Regent Arcade’s ‘Best Dressed Bunny’ competition, and hopped off with a huge Thornton’s Chocolate Bunny worth £50. The Arcade invited children of all ages to dress up their toy rabbits and bring them into the centre for a chance to win chocolate prizes.
Regent Arcade’s deputy centre manager Ken Smith judged the competition. He said: “I was amazed at how much effort everyone had put in. Their outfits were really spectacular and we were delighted to see them in the Arcade. Thank you to everyone who took part”.
