Get on those bikes Team GB!

Cheltenham’s Jill Douglas spoke to Emma Logan regarding Team GB’s cycling chances at this month’s Olympic Games in London.

Jill Douglas has been a sports commentator for the past 15 years covering rugby, cycling and the Olympics. Married to former Scottish rugby international and coach at Gloucester RFC, Carl Hogg, Jill has an enviable reputation as being one of the most professional broadcast journalists of her era. Jill will be following the GB Olympic Cycling team in London.

“Britain’s fortunes in Beijing was unprecedented with 7 medals in the Velodrome and gold and silver on the road,” Jill said, “I am convinced that Mark Cavendish will be bringing home Britain’s 1st gold of the games in the men’s road race on the 1st day of the Olympics.”

Jill will be standing outside Buckingham Palace waiting to do the first interview with Mark when he finishes. She is a huge fan and good friends with Sir Chris Hoy who will be one to beat in the Kieran. She also predicts that Victoria Pendleton as reigning World Champion looks good for the Sprint discipline. This will be a particularly poignant event for Jill as Pendleton will be retiring after the Olympics and Jill was with her at her first Senior Championships back in 2003.

Jill continued, “The whole cycling squad if full of medal potentials and I am so fortunate that in my commentating position, I do have the best ticket at the games. The cycling programme has changed since Beijing and the team can’t match the medal success but they should still be the most successful nation overall in cycling.”

Jill says her best overriding Olympic memory is seeing Usain Bolt win the 100M Finals in Beijing and hopes to be able to sneak into the stadium in London to see a repeat this year, as the event is no doubt a moment of history.

Jill Douglas has been working with the BOA up to the games running media training sessions for the athletes, due to the unprecedented interest from journalists. She will continue to work in this field afterwards and this includes working with corporate companies as well as individuals.

She is also looking forward to hosting the Gloucestershire Sports Awards again this year, which obviously will be carrying an Olympic theme.
