A touch of sparkle

The Cheltonian’s new wine writer Will Morrison, looks at some sparkling bottles, to celebrate during Festival week in Cheltenham

MARKS AND SPENCER PROSECCO
In the past few years there has been a huge surge in popularity for this delicate, tropical and fruity Italian sparkling wine as a cheap and cheerful substitute for Champagne. It's generally off-dry and light, so perfect for a celebratory drink earlier in the day too! A brilliant example is the Marks and Spencer Prosecco. Lively with tropical fruit and floral aromas, and delicate citrus, peach and pear flavours leading to a wonderfully refreshing finish. At 11% ABV it won’t have you falling over the turnstiles, and as a Decanter award winner, you can rest assured it’s a quality tipple.
£9.99 – Marks and Spencer

CLOUDY BAY PELORUS 2007
Lesser known than the famous Sauvignon from Cloudy Bay are their sparkling wines "Pelorus" - made in partnership with Moet and Chandon - if your race day budget won't stretch to genuine Champagne then these wines, made with the same grape varieties and traditional method, will be a brilliant alternative! The Chardonnay dominant blend is evidenced by the pale straw colour and the nose, with aromas of red apple and stone fruit overlaying toasty nougat. The lees ageing shows through with complex bready and yeasty notes on the nose and a toasty creamy palate finished with a delicious nuttiness.
£16.99 – Majestic wines (as part of a mixed case)

BOLLINGER SPECIAL CUVEE NV CHAMPAGNE
If you’ve won big at the races and want to celebrate in style then the class and elegance of genuine Champagne simply can’t be beaten. Founded in 1829, Bollinger is one of the best known and prestigious of all Champagne houses. The dominant grape in the blend is Pinot Noir from Grand and Premier Cru vineyards, making the house style among the richest and full bodied. The Special Cuvee NV is a pale gold, with a rich and persistent mousse of bubbles. Notes of apple and pear on the nose give way to bold and complex brioche, caramel and roasted nuts with a smooth, long and elegant finish on the palate. The perfect way to cap off your day at the races!
£31.99 – Tesco.
