Let them eat cake!

Robyn Morrison and Angharad Welsh indulge in a slice of the action at the Shotgun & Chelsea Bun Club

Since launching two years ago, the Shotgun & Chelsea Bun Club has rapidly grown into the largest ladies only shooting organisation in the UK, with a goal to introduce more women to what has traditionally been a male dominated sport.

The Gloucestershire group is regularly attended by a number of experienced ‘Lady Guns’ but it also welcomes novice members searching for an empowering weekend hobby. The Prescott Shooting Club is the ideal setting. The grounds feature a number of stands, each simulating a different type of game using clay pigeons that fly in all directions, and throughout the day everyone gets to have a go at shooting the targets with a one-to-one lesson from the instructor. There’s honestly nothing more exhilarating than hitting a clay pigeon and watching it shatter into pieces, while the team rest of the team shout encouragement. As well as enjoying learning something new, there’s a great sense of camaraderie amongst the ladies, which leaves you feeling buzzing with confidence by the end of the day.

The £45 cost includes everything you will need; 30 cartridges and clays and full instruction. There’s also the optional invitation to put your baking skills to the test by bringing a cake or pastry for the group to enjoy once back at the Club House.

At the end of the day, all the scores are tallied up and a rosette and prize is given to the highest scorer in each group. A rosette is also awarded to best cake, but be warned; the members of the Shotgun & Chelsea Bun Club are serious bakers and the competition is a selection of rich and indulgent cakes to rival the WI!

As new recruits, we were pleasantly surprised by how welcoming everyone in the group was. It truly is the perfect place to meet new friends and learn a thing or two about shooting in a relaxed and informal setting. Highly recommended for ladies who like to have their cake and eat it!

The next Shotgun & Chelsea Bun Club event takes place at the Ian Coley Shooting Ground, Cheltenham on 27 July 2013. For further information, visit
