My Race for Life Diary

The Cheltonian is happy to be able to support Cancer Research and the ‘Race for Life’ campaign. For the next few months we will follow two readers closely as they train for the race. Please meet our lovely ladies as they introduce themselves...

Age: 24

What race and date are you taking part in this year?
I will be partaking in the 10KM - it’s a bigger challenge and with that I hope
to raise more money!

Have you run the Race4Life before?
Yes I ran it at the racecourse with friends and family when I was younger.

Can you tell us why you have chosen to run in aid of Cancer Research?
I have unfortunately had to experience the pain of seeing friends and a family suffer from cancer and unfortunately lost my Baba (Ukrainian for Grandma) to breast cancer. It is such a worthy cause to help fight cancer for sufferers and future sufferers! Anyone can get cancer.

What training will you be partaking in?
Training hard with Xtreme Bootcamps every Saturday at All Saints Academy, they work every muscle in my body and most importantly push me to my mental limits; it is amazing how much you can do even when your mind is telling you no. I do kickboxing with The Edge Kickboxing twice a week and train for 2 hours at a time, starting with a run to the club, this puts my body in good condition for a long distance run as it is used to being worked for long periods of time. I will also be training with long distance runner and trainer Dan Fivey at The Gym Cheltenham. He is great at managing every detail, and for example he does a lot of body balance techniques to focus on good strength in my ankles and knees to ensure maximum performance.

Are you doing it alone or with a group of family/friends?
I am working on getting family and friends to take on the 10KM challenge with me I have created a team called Team Miss Cheltenham and would love people to join in! I intend to run with the people who I know have been affected by cancer in mind.

Howmuch do you intend to raise?
My fundraising page is I want to raise as much as possible, anything above £100 would be wonderful. I am very passionate about charity work and have raised thousands of pounds already for a range of local and national charities including, the Hollie Gazzard Trust, Beauty with a Purpose, The Pied Piper Appeal, Winstones Wish, and Help for Heroes to name a few, so it is always hard to raise money when friends and family have already supported many events. I hope that through having my journey followed in The Cheltonian, I will be able to get the people of Cheltenham to sponsor me to raise money for Cancer Research!

Age: 35
Race and date taking part: 10k on Sunday 12th July (9:00).

Have you run Race for Life before?
Yes I have. This will be my 4th year running.

Can you tell us why you have chosen to run in aid of Cancer Research?
It’s a charity very close to mine and my family's hearts. I am doing it in memory of my Dad who passed away last year after an 18 month fight against cancer. I want to help others.

What training will you be partaking in?
I'm generally a very active person. I do Zumba 2-3 times a week and go running quite a lot too. As the race gets closer I will start to increase my distances.

Are you doing it alone or with a group?
I have signed up to run it onmy own this year.

How much do you aim to raise?
I raised an amazing amount last year so I’m not expecting to raise as much, I would be happy with around £200.
